Hydraulic Banjo Fittings
Banjo fittings, also known as hollow bolt fittings, feature two parallel sealing surfaces. Their distinctive shape, resembling a banjo, evokes their name. Banjo fittings are quick-connect couplings widely used in hydraulic systems and pipelines. They are widely used in hydraulic, fuel, and brake systems to connect hoses or pipes and transfer fluids under pressure.

This design allows liquid or gas to flow simultaneously through the bolt cavity and the fitting’s annular cavity, achieving a 90° fluid diversion within confined spaces. These fittings are manufactured in accordance with DIN 7642 and can have either metric or other thread types, all in accordance with DIN 7642. Banjo pipe fittings can be either one-piece or welded and are widely used in hydraulic systems, fuel lines, and brake systems.

Classification by structural design
Standard single-port banjo fitting
It features a ring-shaped “eye,” a hollow central bolt, and washers on both sides; fluid flows laterally out from the interior of the bolt through the annular opening.
Double / Multi-way Banjo Fitting
Features a single bolt connecting multiple banjo fittings, enabling flow splitting or parallel fluid supply. It has a more complex structure, typically incorporating stepped internal channels.
90° / L type banjo fitting
The outlet direction is fixed at 90°, saving installation space; it is commonly used with flexible hoses.
Classified by thread type
1. Metric
M8 / M10 / M12 / M14 / M16
Common in European and Japanese equipment; most frequently used in braking systems.
2. BSP (British Standard Pipe Thread)
Includes BSPP (parallel) and BSPT (tapered) threads.
Common in industrial equipment from the UK and Asia.
3. NPT (National Pipe Taper)
Common in US equipment; offers strong compatibility with hydraulic systems.
4. UNF / JIC Combination
Primarily used in high-pressure hydraulic systems.
Commonly found in adapter and banjo bolt assemblies.
Classified by connection method
Hose Barb: Features annular barbs at the end; the fitting is inserted directly into the hose and secured with a clamp. Advantages include low cost and quick installation; suitable for low-pressure environments.
Threaded: Features standard threads (such as NPT, BSP, or metric) at the end, allowing it to be screwed directly into the equipment port. Suitable for medium- to high-pressure systems, providing a secure connection.
Weld/Ferrule: Designed with a welding bevel at the end or an internal compressible ferrule (such as a “One-Piece” design). Used with rigid metal tubing; suitable for ultra-high-pressure and high-temperature operating conditions.

The automotive industry is one of the most common applications for banjo connectors. They are used in braking systems, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, and turbochargers.

Banjo fittings for automotive fuel systems
In industrial machinery, banjo connectors are also commonly used in hydraulic and pneumatic systems, automation, and robotics across a variety of industrial equipment.
In the hydraulic systems of heavy agricultural or construction equipment, such as tractors and harvesters, or large construction equipment like excavators and cranes, banjo connectors maintain hydraulic circuit stability, ensuring reliable operation under harsh conditions.
How to connect a hose to a banjo connector?
Depending on the hose type, there are two main connection methods: hydraulic hose and connector crimping, and low-pressure hose and banjo connector direct plug-in connection.
Hydraulic Hose and banjo fittings
1. Insert the end of the hose into the nozzle on the end of the banjo connector (usually a barbed or crimped fitting).
2. Use a hydraulic crimping machine to press the sleeve onto the hose and the end of the connector to create a permanent joint.
3. After crimping, inspect the indentation depth, concentricity, and seal.
