Flange Structure and Classification
The structure of a flange fitting generally consists of a flange plate, a hose tail, a sealing ring, and bolts. Flange fittings vary, with common types including welded flanges, slip-on flanges, plate-type flat-weld flanges, flange tees, crosses, and flange elbows (for details, refer to this guide). Connection methods include bolting, welding, and fusion.
Flanges can be categorized into light-duty flanges and heavy-duty flanges according to pressure rating. SAE 61 flanges are suitable for applications with working pressures between 3,000 and 5,000 PSI. SAE 62 flanges are suitable for applications with working pressures up to 6,000 PSI.
Hydraulic Flange Standards
Hydraulic flange standards vary primarily based on the region of use.
1. SAE J518 standard. SAE flanges are the most widely used and are commonly found on European and American equipment. They are divided into two types based on pressure rating: SAE Code 61 (3000 PSI) (medium pressure) and SAE Code 62 (6000 PSI) (high pressure).
2. ISO 6162 international flange standard, which offers high interchangeability with SAE flanges, is divided into ISO 6162-1 (Code 61) and ISO 6162-2 (Code 62).
3. German standard, commonly known as DIN flange, is commonly found in European hydraulic systems.
4. JIS flange standard, a Japanese industrial standard, is commonly found on Asian and Japanese equipment.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Flange Fittings
Flange fittings have many advantages, with their ability to withstand high pressure being one of the most prominent. SAE Code 62 flanges can withstand working pressures up to 6000 PSI, far exceeding most threaded fittings.
They are suitable for large-diameter pipes. For hydraulic hoses exceeding 1″, threaded fittings struggle to maintain a tight seal and security, but flange fittings do. Flange fittings not only provide excellent sealing but also offer excellent vibration and shock resistance, making them easy to install and maintain.
Flange fittings also have certain disadvantages, such as their large size and weight, resulting in higher costs, and the internal O-rings restrict their use in high-temperature environments.
What are the applications of hydraulic flange fittings?
SAE flange clamps and fittings are commonly used in heavy machinery such as excavators and cranes. Bolting securely connects pipes and equipment, making them suitable for medium- and high-pressure environments and capable of withstanding high working pressures.
In the metallurgical, oil and gas, and wind power industries, hydraulic flange fittings are often used in high-temperature and high-pressure environments, such as connecting pipes in wind turbine hydraulic systems.
